Sunwing Vacations joined the fight against ALS this week by taking up the Ice Bucket Challenge at the company’s head office in Toronto.
Cheered on by 200 Sunwing employees, Group Vice President Lawrence Elliott formally accepted the challenge Tuesday morning on the company’s behalf and pledged their support to ALS Canada, in turn challenging key representatives of the national tourist boards of The Bahamas, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Mexico to do the same.
He was joined by company Founder and Chairman, Colin Hunter, and Chief Operating Officer, Andrew Dawson. Also in the firing line were Brian Gocool, director of national sales centre; Alvin Chau, chief information officer; Ram Sud, VP, payload; Jennifer Perry, director of product; Cristina Caponi-Davis, VP, inventory/costing/destinations; and Deana Murphy, VP, retail sales. As they prepared to dump their buckets, however, the group was taken by surprise as seven Sunwing employees poured icy water from atop a Sunwing Airlines maintenance van.
Following the event, Dawson pledged to donate $10 to ALS Canada for each time their Ice Bucket Challenge video was shared via social media using the hashtags #icebucketchallenge #StrikeOutALS #champagneserviceONICE, up to a maximum of $10,000. An additional donation was pledged to OneXOne, Sunwing Travel Group’s regular charity partner which has founded over 60 water projects across Africa.
