In a video message posted on X (previously known as Twitter), Canada's Transport Minister, Omar Alghabra, announced his decision not to run in the next election and, therefore, leaving the Cabinet.
"After almost 11 years as a member of parliament, two and a half years as a minister, and six elections, I've made the difficult decision to not run in the next election," Alghabra shares in the video.
Stressing that he will however remain in office as MP for Mississauga Centre, Alghabra specifies that he is retiring from his role as minister “because the Prime Minister deserves a cabinet who is committed to running the next federal campaign."
The news comes as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau prepares to announce a major cabinet reshuffle that could also, sources say, see Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino removed from his current cabinet duties.
