Princess Cruises is changing several Alaska itineraries due to the closure of a forward berth by White Pass Rail Road.

The berth, a busy cruise ship dock in Skagway, is apparently at risk of a rockslide, as was confirmed in this report by geotechnical and environmental consulting firm Shannon & Wilson.

“Given our onsite observations, reported historic movement of the slide mass, and the apparent increase in movement rates measured by the instrumentation, we believe that there is a significant risk associated with complete failure of this feature,” the firm wrote. “It is our opinion that the slide mass will eventually fail and the consequences of such failure will be catastrophic in nature with significant risks to life and property.”

The berth at the Railroad Dock is where Princes Cruises’ Royal Class ships dock, so the cruise line has announced some changes.

“The health and safety of our guests and crew are always our top priority and we appreciate and support this decision,” Princess said in a statement on Tuesday.

What this is means is that Majestic Princess will now call on Icy Strait Point on Tuesday, July 26, instead.

But Crown Princess will continue its scheduled call on July 26 in Skagway because it docks at a different pier.

The update also impacts Royal Princess’ July 27 call, Discovery Princess’ July 28 call, and Grand Princess’ July 30 call and Princess says it is working on re-routing the ships to another port.

“Princess will continue to work with officials from Skagway and the White Pass Rail Road to determine when scheduled calls can return,” the cruise line said.
