The number of international visitors to Canada continues to rise with the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, according to a report from Statistics Canada released Tuesday (May 24).

But the number still remains below pre-pandemic levels.

In March 2022, 148,900 overseas residents arrived in Canada, according to the report.

Although this figure is more than five times as many compared to March 2021, it's less than half or 43 per cent of the number of overseas residents who entered Canada that same month in 2019.

U.S. residents made 465,200 trips to Canada in March 2022, nearly five times as many as March 2021. But this was 31.9 per cent of the 1.5 million trips taken in March 2019.

Of the total trips made by Americans in March 2022, 310,300 were by automobile and 42 per cent were same-day returns, the report said.

Compared with March 2021, Canadian residents made more than six times more trips home from visiting abroad in March 2022, but this was just over one-third (37.1 per cent) of the trips taken in March 2019.

European visitors to Canada is up, however.

That number jumped to 68,800 in March 2022 from 5,600 in March 2021, while visitors from Asia also rose to 33,700 from 12,100.

Both, however, were below March 2019 levels, the report stated.

The update comes after the Government of Canada, in February, announced a phased easing of travel rules that were issued in late 2021 to tackle the Omicron variant.

As of Feb. 28, travellers entering Canada were given the option of providing a negative COVID-19 rapid antigen test, taken the day prior to their scheduled flight or arrival at the land border.

On the same day, restrictions as to where international passenger flights could arrive in Canada were also lifted, allowing flights to once again land at all international Canadian airports.

Pre-arrival COVID testing has since ended for fully-vaccinated travellers entering Canada.

Canadian trips to U.S. growing

Canadian residents returned from 1.3 million trips to the U.S. in March 2022, which is more than five times as many as in March 2021 (256,900), but one-third (33.4 per cent) of the 4.0 million such trips in March 2019, StatCan reports.

While the number of return air trips by Canadians rose from 18,900 in March 2021 to 549,300 in 2022, this was under half (48.3 per cent) the number of such trips from the same month in 2019, before the pandemic.

More Canadians also seemed to take March Break vacations, with 685,000 residents returning from visits overseas, up from 48,800 in March 2021 but less than half of the 1.4 million Canadians who flew home in March 2019.
