Crash prompts new requirement for Canadian airlines

In the wake of this week’s Germanwings tragedy, the federal government has made it mandatory for Canadian airlines to have two flight crew members in the cockpit at all times.

The requirement was announced yesterday by Transport Minister Lisa Raitt, just hours after French authorities declared the Germanwings crash in the French Alps a deliberate act by the flight’s 28-year-old co-pilot, who is alleged to have locked out the pilot from the cockpit before putting the Airbus A320 into its fatal descent.

Prior to the government’s announcement, the same requirement had been announced by Air Canada earlier in the day.
