Uniglobe looks to the future at Montreal conference

More than 150 travel agents and 80 suppliers gathered in Montreal this past weekend, for Uniglobe’s 33rd annual Regional Fall Conference.

The three-day event, held at Montreal’s Marriot Chateau Champlain, gave agents a chance to meet with various travel companies in a trade show setting, as well as attend a number of sessions detailing current trends and challenges shaping the industry.

Sonia McKeon, Uniglobe’s Director of Marketing and Supplier Relations, told PAX that the conference, under the theme of Shaping the Future, focused on current and evolving technologies and their potential use in the management of corporate accounts by Uniglobe agents.

“We’re looking at things that are happening in the corporate world, like apps and technology, that will help our agencies grow and manage their corporate accounts,” said McKeon.

Currently, McKeon said that social media is among the dominant technological advances shaping the travel world, requiring agents to become adept at tracking business through the use of platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.

“I think in the travel industry,” said McKeon, “you have to change when things happen, and react. Technology is a big thing in the travel industry – it’s come a long way.”

With Uniglobe representing 90 agencies across Canada, McKeon said that even in the age of online travel services, the company still maintains a physical presence, which offers advantages to agents and their clients alike.

“We have full service – we still have physical agencies you can walk into,” McKoen told PAX. “We have all the technology for companies who want to manage their business online but still offer the comfort knowing that if there is a problem, you still have someone you can call. And we’re not a call centre – it’s a personalized service.”
