In its latest review of claims against the Travel Compensation Fund, the Travel Industry Council of Ontario compensated one customer while denying 54 other claims.
On May 26, TICO’s Board of Directors approved payment of $2,600 to assist one consumer who did not receive the travel services for which they had paid. The payment was due to the closure of Smartchoice Travel & Tours in Toronto.
The board also denied 54 claims, totalling $164,470.12. While one claim was filed beyond the legislated six-month filing deadline and another was based on the cost of travel services that were provided, 52 of those claims were denied due to insufficient documentation to support and/or on the basis that the consumer’s payment was not received by a registered Ontario travel agent.
