After being charged by the Travel Industry Council of Ontario (TICO), Libia Ysabel Guerra Paez and Representaciones Neward Inc. were convicted of one count each of operating as a travel agent without being registered.
Libia Ysabel Guerra Paez was further convicted of one count of being an officer or director and failing to take reasonable care to prevent the corporation from committing an offence.
TICO says Libia Ysabel Guerra Paez and Representaciones Neward Inc. operated without TICO registration.
They accepted consumer payment for travel services and absconded with the funds without booking the services for the consumer, according to a May 16 press release.
Representaciones Neward Inc. was fined $12,500, inclusive of a victim surcharge. Libia Ysabel Guerra Paez, meanwhile, was sentenced to 30 days in jail and a two-year probation.
TICO prosecutes unregistered companies and individuals to maintain the integrity of Ontario’s travel marketplace and ensure consumers are confident purchasing travel from registered professionals.
